Wabash Valley College's Advanced Manufacturing program is tailored to equip students with the essential skills required to succeed as skilled-trades workers in the industry. Our program offers a range of pathways, including becoming a manual machinist, CNC (computer numerical control) machine operator, CNC programmer, PLC (programmable logic controller) programmer, robotics technician, or general automation technician. Our curriculum is designed to provide students with hands-on experience and knowledge in their chosen field, preparing them to excel in their careers. Graduates from our program are well-equipped to enter the workforce as entry-level professionals in the manufacturing industry. Our program stands out as the only program of its kind in Southern Illinois. Our program values the input of our advisory council and area employers to ensure our students receive training that is relevant and useful in the workforce. With our state-of-the-art facilities, we offer training on a wide range of technologies to equip our students with the skills needed to succeed in manufacturing-related fields.

Many of our students arrive with little to no prior experience in metalworking or other manufacturing-related disciplines due to the discontinuation of shop programs in local high schools. However, our experienced instructors are prepared to take them from square one and provide them with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to excel in their careers. At our Advanced Manufacturing program, students gain expertise in operating a range of machining equipment, as well as mastering basic industrial electricity, PLC programming, blueprint reading, CAD (computer-aided drafting), and precision measurement. Our program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the manufacturing industry and equip them with the practical skills necessary to excel in their careers.

Scholarships

On top of the scholarships offered by the school, WVC's Advanced Manufacturing program also meet the qualifications for the Mike Rowe Works Scholarship.

Internships & Trips

Although internships are not mandatory for the Advanced Manufacturing program, the majority of students opt to work with nearby manufacturers. Additionally, the program arranges at least one annual educational trip to manufacturing facilities, which may include a comprehensive tour of automobile plants, aircraft manufacturing units like Boeing, and other similar sites.

Jay Carter— Advanced Manufacturing Lead Instructor

Jay Carter has been an instructor at Wabash Valley College since 2005. He holds an Associate in Applied Science degree in Machine Shop Technology from Wabash Valley College and is a graduate of the Nashville Auto-Diesel College. Additionally, Carter holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management and Applied Engineering from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Carter has also attended numerous industry training sessions, including FANUC Robotics Factory School, SOLIDWORKS Advanced 3D Modeling and Assembly Modeling and FeatureCAM training. Over the years, Carter has worked for the United States Marine Corps, Corning Cable Systems (fiber optics manufacturing), Quality Ford and LeMonds Chrysler.

Scheduling an Advising Appointment

Before enrolling in a degree or certificate program, students must first schedule an appointment with an academic advisor. Advisement is an essential step in college education to make informed and educated decisions. Advisors also ensure you are earning all necessary credits to apply towards your chosen degree or certificate program.

Patrick has been advising students at WVC since 2018. He assists in advising, assessing, registration and placement of students into career and technical education programs. Patrick holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science/Secondary Education from the University of Southern Indiana and a Master of Arts degree in Education/Sports Leadership and Coaching from West Liberty University. Patrick also serves as the WVC Women’s Head Soccer Coach.

Michelle has been advising students at WVC since 2013. She advises nursing and pre-nursing students; evaluates placement test scores and advises students of impact on ranking and/or remediation options, in addition to administering pre-admission testing. Michelle holds an Associate in Science degree from Wabash Valley College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Murray State University.

Cindy is a TRIO Alum with a passion for helping others recognize their strengths to realize their potential. She received her associate in science and arts-psychology from OCC in 2021. She was awarded a bachelor's in science and arts-psychology degree in December 2023 from Indiana State University. Her caring and supportive nature provides her students with a trustworthy advocate who refuses to allow them to give up. She joined the IECC family in May of 2023 and plans to be cheering her students on for the long haul.

Overview

The Agricultural Technology Business program at WVC provides students with an in-depth understanding of crop and livestock production, as well as emerging trends in the agricultural sector. In addition to cultivating essential agricultural skills, such as communication, marketing, management, and financing, students are prepared for a diverse range of challenging and rewarding positions within the industry.

As part of the Agricultural Technology Production program, students will have the chance to acquire their Commercial Pesticide Operator license. Moreover, the coursework offered will prepare them to sit for the written test for the Commercial Drivers License. This program provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to become well-rounded professionals in the agricultural sector.

The internship program is a standout feature of this program. Students are given the opportunity to participate in various internships, which encompass diverse areas such as agricultural education, finance, communication, farm management, and other agriculture-related fields. This experience enables students to gain hands-on knowledge and develop practical skills, thus enhancing their career prospects in the agricultural industry.

Student Clubs & Organizations

Students in WVC's Ag Production program are eligible to participate in several student clubs:

Agriculture Technology Club – Students will participate in campus activities and co-sponsor educational trips

Collegiate Farm Bureau Club- Students will participate in campus activities and in local Farm Bureau activities, attend meetings and presentations on agricultural issues and co-sponsor educational trips

National Professional Agricultural Student Organization – Students can participate in competitions and professional development opportunities

Program Internships – "Learn while you earn" in entry-level agricultural positions

Scholarships

In addition to scholarships that all WVC students are eligible for, students in WVC's Agricultural Production program are eligible for the GROWMARK Scholarship. Students may also be eligible for scholarships through their local county farm bureaus, FFA chapters and other community organizations.

Doug Robb— Agricultural Business, Lead Instructor

Doug Robb is a dedicated full-time Agriculture Instructor at Wabash Valley College, with a strong background in agriculture education. Having grown up on a 2000-acre grain and livestock farm in Kinmundy, IL, Robb developed a deep passion for agriculture. He pursued his academic interests at Kaskaskia College, where he earned an A.S. degree, and later at the University of Illinois, where he earned both a B.S. in Agriculture Education and an M.S. in Agriculture.

Following his academic pursuits, Robb taught high school agriculture for two years at Mulberry Grove High School in Mulberry Grove, IL, and 12 years at West Richland High School in Noble, IL. In addition to agriculture, he also taught chemistry, physics, and general science courses. As the agriculture teacher, he was also the FFA Advisor, where he guided many successful FFA members. Even today, Robb still participates in and assists at various Section 23 FFA activities.

Since 2007, Robb has served as the Lead Instructor of the Agriculture Technology Business program at Wabash Valley College. His primary focus has been on helping students realize their career aspirations, and he takes immense pride in their accomplishments. In addition to his core responsibilities, he has also taught General Biology I, Introduction to Chemistry, and General Botany courses at WVC.

Overview

The Agricultural Technology Production program provides comprehensive instruction in essential agricultural sciences, including agronomy, animal science, soils, fertilizers, chemicals, animal nutrition, crop production, and precision agriculture. Additionally, students will develop the managerial, financial, and marketing skills necessary to overcome the challenges associated with farming and farm-related businesses. The program is designed to ensure that students are well-prepared to thrive in the agricultural industry.

The internship program is a standout feature of the Agricultural Technology Production program, providing students with diverse opportunities to gain practical experience. Internship options include seed corn production, farming, agricultural equipment operation, agricultural equipment maintenance, and operations in agricultural service companies.

In addition, students in the program will have the chance to earn their Commercial Pesticide Operator license and complete coursework to prepare for the Commercial Drivers Licenses written test. These valuable certifications and skills will position students for success in the agricultural industry.

Alex Hamblin — Agricultural Technology, Lead Instructor

As an alumna of the WVC Agriculture Program, she holds the distinction of earning both agriculture A.A.S degrees offered, as well as two professional certificates. After completing her studies at WVC, she transferred to Murray State University, where she pursued and achieved two B.S. degrees in Agriculture Leadership and Agriculture Communications. Subsequently, she worked in various sectors of the agricultural industry, such as grain merchandising, governmental agriculture, cooperative extension, and row crop, before deciding to pursue a master's degree in Agriculture Leadership, Communication, & Education from the University of Missouri.

Currently, Hamblin serves as the WVC Collegiate Farm Bureau Advisor, where she is committed to assisting students in identifying meaningful opportunities and careers in agriculture. Her dedication to student success is reflected in her belief in the words of a former advisor, who once said, "We want students to get an education, not just a degree."

Careers

Students in the Agricultural Technology Production program prepare for careers in farming and farm-related occupations. Besides farming, other entry-level occupations that program graduates may seek include agricultural extension, agronomy, agricultural communication, farm management, agricultural finance, agricultural production, soil and water conservation technicians and positions in agricultural service and supply industries.
